The best part of the pattern is the numerous options- 144 to be exact.
This is the most recent but it's is the 7th time I have made the pattern and it does not disappoint.
Here I chose to add the kangaroo pocket, shoulder stripes, and cuffs. The monster fabric is a favorite tee from when Mae was a baby that met its end when it went through the wash with a sticker. I've been waiting to repurpose it and the size was perfect for the pocket.

Probably my favorite thing about this pattern is the ability to add detail with pockets and stripes with so little fabric. It has allowed me to use a lot of old knits that I just have small pieces of. (Mae is rocking his Small Fry Skinny Jeans in green snake skin in these pics as well. )

The patterns that Laura creates are the best I have found and are my go-to for wearable ready-to-wear clothes for my boys. The ability to print layers, detailed instructions with photographs and labels, and professional finishing techniques all make her patterns just one step above.

With this pattern you get the added bonus of multiple combinations to create completely different looks. And the fit is spot on, not to mention you get a huge range of sizes.

So definitely fell off the blog train for awhile.
It's been a crazy house over here and sometimes it just easier to be present here and let all else fall to the wayside.

So fun to be part of Louise's game series and part of a small Project Run & Play reunion.
Go check it out here!

I got the pleasure of testing the Ainsley & Aiden Baby Suite I patterns and what a treat it was. Not only are the patterns versatile but I got to sew for this boy. As the youngest boy of three he has hand-me-downs for days but its fun to sew something brand new. I went the route of creating basics that will mix and match but you could also create some unique pieces with this pattern set.

My favorite? The bodysuit! The length is perfect, the snap area long enough to cover even a cloth diaper bum, and the envelope neck is a great place to add fun detail. I've made a few different bodysuit patterns in the past but this one was right in many ways. The instructions are clear and include the option to use a regular sewing machine over a serger. The sizing was spot on and covers the entire baby range (premie-12M). The way that Kim finishes the binding is genius, which reduces bulk but still produces a professional outcome. Raleigh has worn this orange one I made for him more than anything else in the last weeks.

The pattern set is well written and one that I will use many times over.

Have even made a couple more tees already that I hope to blog soon.

Can't thank Kim enough for allowing me to test.

And oh yes, even some sewing for myself!
Hoping to be back here more often.
When I was asked to participate in Project Run and Play I was so shocked.
I just wanted to make it past week one....four weeks later and I made it through the finale.
So thank you for your support, your comments, your willingness to go through this journey with me.

The one thing I told myself prior to starting this season was I wanted to challenge myself.
I wanted this to be a learning experience for me. Yes I had some sewing skills coming in but I was making lots of shirts and pants for my boys, because that is what they wear everyday. This was my chance to push myself to do more.

Week one was maybe the biggest challenge of all. Working with a fabric I knew nothing about and taking on a project that was way over my skill. But after multiple hours I learned so many new things from just making this one jacket.

Week two was a whole different story. A look for a girl. Not only did finding a model turn out to be an interesting project, but its just so different to embellish an outfit with girly touches. This is something I rarely do since I have three boys but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Plus I am hoping to copycat a few of these pieces for myself.

Week three was my element- refashioning. To push myself this week I worked with some different techniques. Welt pockets, drafting from measurements, dying a colored fabric, and of course adding a crochet element. There were many points this week where I had to make it work because of the new skills I was working with but apparently it came together because I won this week....wow!

The finale.
This week I worked with some wovens for a challenge. My fabric of choice is definitely knit because of the comfort factor for my boys. But I stepped out on a limb and chose some wovens and dove in. Definitely different than knits- at one point when hemming Case's pants I was wishing I hadn't chosen a woven but I figured it out.

What can I say after finishing it all?
I loved the chance to participate. I loved how my community stepped up and made it apparent that they love and support my work. This wouldn't have happened without a few people. My husband who rallied not only for support but also stepped up to take our boys for hours on end. My good friend Kara who walked with me step by step and was honest when things were not looking good. And each and every one of you who took the time to vote and get me through all four weeks.
So thank you.
I am unsure what direction I will go next. Will for sure keep sewing for my boys and hoping to sew more for myself. (Suggestions on good women's patterns?!)

But should probably clean up the mess that I created the last four weeks....oh...my.
I started with a look for Case.
The flannel was my challenge this week. My fabric of choice is definitely knit but I told myself when I committed to Run and Play this season that I needed to choose one thing that would push me out of my comfort zone each week. This week it was working with some wovens. For the flannel I started with the O + S Sailboat Top and the hood from this raincoat and the bimaa hood. I redrafted the front to add a snap placket and spent way too much time to make sure the plaid pattern would line up across the pieces. I added the black tee underneath, which was made using the Made by Rae Skinny Tee. To add some interest I flat locked the seams with yellow and added a rib knit printed with helicopters for the cuffs.

The pants were the same pattern (same size) as these pants I made for Mae in week one. The kid had asked for a candy pocket in the front- which became a teeny welt pocket. The zip pocket and back pocket were added to create more visual interest, and of course an adjustable waistband. He had specifically asked for a super backpack so I pulled a canvas jacket out of my reuse pile and cut it to pieces. We have an American Apparel backpack that I used as a reference but did a lot of my own interpretation as well. The pink zipper and pink hang tab were to add interest and pull out the subtle pink in the canvas. Having not made a cargo pocket before I added one to the front and finished the flap with heavy duty snaps. All hardware was bought at Seattle Fabrics.
Mae was next- my child who is perpetually cold. He has been asking for a scarf all winter but I couldn't figure out a way to make it practical and masculine. Enter this cozy fleece with a subtle print and I created a snap cowl: a collar for the jacket or an accessory for anytime. As soon as I put it on him he asked if he could wear it the rest of the day. Hoping to mimic a poncho I drafted an oversized jacket, adding arm holes to allow for movement. I started with the flashback tee for this jacket as well and then altered the pattern to get the oversized look. I wanted a vertical stripe but could only find this grey sweatshirt knit in my stash. So I pulled out a grey knit tee and cut one inch strips which I folded, ironed, and sewed in place to create the pinstripes. I wanted pockets that popped so left them grey and added a bias dark grey trim to add some definition.

The top, also a sweatshirt fleece, got a bias stripe across the front in his favorite color and a green zip pocket. The nice part about the stripe across the front it allow a seam to anchor the pocket, so it doesn't just float around inside the shirt. I used a freezer paper stencil to add the elephants marching. For the pants, also a pinstripe, I redrafted the waist to include both a traditional and knit waistband. This gives the finished look of ready-to-wear pants but allows ease of self-dressing for my boy.

There is it. A little bit of creativity from my boys and a whole lot of quirk.
For the track jacket I started with the See Kate Sew Recess Raglan but had to modify it to get the look I wanted. One tip for using t-shirts patterns to create hoodies or jackets: make sure you redraft the neck to include the neckband on the front and back body pieces. Or your neck hole will be too big once sewn together. I love when the inside of handmade clothes are as beautiful as the outside. Hence the serged seams and seam casing.

The vest was a pattern I drafted from an old tee. I wanted the shoulder seam to come to the front a bit so I could add the epaulets and rounded the front to add the snaps. I used a disappearing ink pen and quilting ruler to make the diamonds with lines drawn at 60 degrees. The lining was on old work vest and I kept the original 3M reflective material intact.

The tee was an old tank top with the boom box graphic and then a stripy long sleeve. I used the Made by Rae Skinny Tee but redrafted the width of the 5T so that it wouldn't be as skinny.

The pants were old corduroys that I hand dyed to get a mustard color. I used the same pattern that I used for these pants that I sewed to go with the rain jacket. I added an adjustable waistband using this tutorial from Craftstorming as well as the half fly. (Great resource-check it out!!) My favorite part of the pants is the hidden back pocket. Would love to do a tutorial for it if there is interest. This pair of pants from last year also had a hidden pocket.

Once again I wanted to challenge myself to try things I hadn't done before. The welt pockets on the jacket were new as well as hand sewing the bias on the vest so that the hem didn't show. Also adding interest to the knee of the pants was a new skill because I had to alter the pattern instead of just sewing on knee pads. Love that I have grown and learned new skills through this process.

Movie week and my choice was Schindler's List.
Chosen more for the cinematography than the movie itself.
I love the grayscale that is used throughout the entire film and then one girl in a red coat.

I decided to stick with the grayscale for the entire look with a pop of red in the jacket.
Using texture to add interest instead of colors.
And doing a girl look to continue to challenge myself to create things outside of my norm.

I started with the jacket, redrafting the Made by Rae skinny tee to create a pattern. Using black and grey fabric to create a geometric print, making sure to include one red square. I used a skinny red elastic, up cycled from some christmas coffee bags, to create the weave. I had cream chenille left over in my stash from some baby gifts I had made, so used it to add warmth to the jacket. I also loved that it gave visual interest with the vertical stripes. Having left over geometric print I also used it to make the pockets to add a little extra detail.

The tee, also created using the Made by Rae skinny tee, altered a bit to add the back yoke and button placket. The grey and white knit are both from old tees that were in my stash. The lace is from a table cloth and the buttons from a sweater that had a hole.

The skirt was made from the measurements of my model and grey fabric with a concrete print. I drew the triangle grid and then sewed to create the quilting. Lined the entire thing with the same lace from the table cloth- making the skirt fully reversible.

A huge thank you to my model and her mama for allowing me to try out a girl design this week.

Probably one of my favorite projects to date.
I really wanted to challenge myself and this was definitely that.
Not to mention 20+ hours of work.
But all for a custom rain jacket for my oldest in his favorite green....love it!

When I started researching, everything I read lead me to Seattle Fabrics and upon entering the store for the first time I fell in love. Seriously every product you could ever need to make high quality outerwear. They also ship products and their website is extremely helpful. This article on Sewaholic was also one of the most informative pieces I found to give me an idea of what I was getting into.

I started with this pattern for the jacket and then highly altered not only the shape of the jacket but also the fit. I ended up redrafting quite a few of the pieces to get the exact look I wanted. I incorporated many details from the different store bought rain jackets that we already own. All fabric and supplies were bought from Seattle Fabrics.

The pants were drafted from a pair of old sweatpants. I had to add all the details, create the adjustable waistband and also the back yoke. The fabric for these were an old pair of jeans but I completely cut them apart and didn't use any of the existing details.

The seam taping. Easily the most intimidating part of the entire process but not difficult once you know what you are doing. It wasn't as hard as what I thought. I bought extra Melco Iron-On Seam Tape and did some practicing before I tried it on the jacket. Thankful I took the time to practice because the taped leaked glue on my iron and all over the practice piece. Hoping to do a tutorial on how to apply the seam tape at some point.

Wanted to sew something for Mae for the holidays.
My younger boys have hand-me-downs they can rock but not Mae.
Plus the kid has started to make specific requests for his wardrobe.

His request: a sweater, green, with white collar, and finished with buttons.

I used the Greenpoint Cardigan pattern and sized up to a 4T so it would be a little big.
I didn't want too much of a contrast in the white collar so decided to print all the ribbing pieces with white lightening bolts instead. Using freezer paper and my exacto blade I went to work cutting out each bolt and then painted with fabric paint.

A ton of work, but worth the effort.

Love that it can be paired with red and herringbone for the holidays but also worn beyond as everyday garb.
The first was a quick fix on a jacket I made last year.

Case pulled out this giraffe jacket and wanted to wear it.
However, the knit I had used had rolled and even though I hemmed it, wouldn't stay unrolled.
Totally not a big deal but enough to completely annoy me, so I fixed it by adding a piece of webbing along the bottom.

The second top was a little more work than the other things I have made this week, but not much.
I used the See Kate Sew Recess Raglan and added a placket and finished the edges with knit binding.

But oops....I didn't pay attention to the sizing chart and made a 4T.
Big mistake. It was much too big for my 4 year old who is tall and thin.
Oh well...something he will grow into in time.

We own quite a few and the ones we don't own are on constant check out from the library.

So it was only right that Mae picked a Richard Scarry knight for Halloween.

Ha. Still makes me laugh.

This book was his first introduction to knights and he loved that they were brave.
He picked this specific knight and was insistent for that pineapple.

Used Made by Rae Flashback Skinny Tee and cut the back up the middle and added velcro for easy dressing. The hood is from the Bimaa Sweater and is separate from the top. The pants are self drafted as well as the breast plate. I used a grey fleece, chosen by Mae, for the entire look which made it a pretty quick and easy project because I didn't have to finish seams.

Another couple pieces.
Mae grew out of every pant and every long sleeve over the summer, so both these are much needed additions to his closet.

The Made by Rae Flashback Skinny Tee is a favorite. Plus using existing hems from old clothes speeds up the process even more. I redrafted the back to come up over the shoulder to add a bit of detail.

The pants were made using Rae's Parsley Pants Pattern. Made from an old pair of Jordan basketball shorts, I also used existing hems to make these a super easy project. And of course because they are green and Jordan they are his new favorite piece of clothing.jacqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352876847326429859noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109823081313800760.post-19480817534275990102013-10-21T13:43:00.000-07:002013-10-21T13:43:17.593-07:00fall kcw: day one

This is Raleigh, almost three months old.
Our third boy so really he has a gazillion hand me downs but I wanted a quick project so he got some new pants.

Used this baby pant pattern from The Purl Bee. Had made it once before in a 0-3 so sized these up and also made the legs a bit thinner for a skinnier fit. Used an old sweatshirt for the grey knit and a newborn tee for the bum insert.

The fit is good for this boy and his cloth diaper but when he has disposables these pants are much too wide.

Hopefully more to come this week.jacqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352876847326429859noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109823081313800760.post-26907198806545625182013-09-30T05:50:00.000-07:002013-09-30T05:50:12.835-07:00pr&p week four

Since most of what I sew is for my boys, I strive to use colors, prints, and texture to add interest.
Especially since the shapes of most their tees and pants are basic.
I also attempt to find a way to make a basic piece stand out with small details or a pop of color.

This is what I came up with this time around:

I self drafted the tee and upcycled three different tee shirts, the helicopter print being one of my all time favorites. I love the weathered look that the turquoise knit has beside the very fine rib knit of the sleeves.

The pants were made using the free Small Fry Skinny Jeans pattern from Titchy Threads. I added interior front pockets and skipped the fly completely. Instead I opted to add a knit waistband in army green. Most the Korean and Japanese pants we have for our boys have a similar knit waistband and we have found it makes their pants so much more comfy! I chose an old pair of dress pants with the subtle stripe for texture in this look. I also added a small tag to the back pocket, in the same army green as the waistband to add more interest.

If pushed I would still pick the word quirky to describe how I create for these boys.
The hoodie for this look that still lives in my sketch book would wrap things up nicely.
For today, it will stay in my book but I'm sure Case will rock this look with his brother's old giraffe jacket and complete the quirky for me.

The theme this week was a tough one for me.
Tough because most readily available plaid is a woven and my boys wear 98% knit.

So when I sorted through my fabric looking for inspiration and came across a pair of teeny Japanese shorts that were a plaid knit I got very excited. I didn't have much fabric to work with- just enough for the pocket and a little bit of knit bias tape.

I used the Made by Rae flashback skinny tee and added a hood. The neck just about did me in and is still a little wonky. Mae loves it and the kid is in desperate need of new long sleeve tees as our weather has definitely turned to fall.jacqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352876847326429859noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109823081313800760.post-2028026240324986082013-09-18T22:01:00.002-07:002013-09-18T22:01:35.902-07:00pr&p week twoWeek two over at Project Run & Play this week.
Candy week.

This look started with the Wonka Bar. Actually the golden ticket was the true beginning.

Using the Oliver+S Sailboat Pant pattern I edited the shape of front placket then added gold piping. On the back I redrafted the pant to include a hidden pocket and contrast waist band, using a red stripe to pull in the wrapper color.

The shirt came next, pulling inspiration from The Oompa Loompas. I self drafted a baseball tee then used an old stripy tee and some green knit.

The final piece alludes to none other than Willy Wonka. I altered the DMK Warm Hoodie Vest pattern to create a vest that isn't quite as double breasted as the original. I also redrafted the hood to make it two pieces, simply because the print was so busy already. The most obvious change was finishing the vest with a contrast bias tape to add to the Willy Wonka vibe.

Once this look came together it struck me as a little zany for sure.

But then again so was Wonka.

So I did manage to sew something...actually a few things but only one of them got photographed.

I inherited some wonderful knits from a friend who was making a goodwill run and in the pile were these black workout pants. I used the Made by Rae Parsley Pants Pattern in a size 4. I decided to cut them below the knee to create long shorts because my boys are always running and falling and this somewhat protects their knees.

Adding the pink tuxedo stripe was a last minute detail I decided to add and wavered whether they made the shorts look feminine but Mae loves them and rocks them well.

Hoping to post a couple other projects before the first summer edition of Kids Clothing Week goes in the books.jacqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352876847326429859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109823081313800760.post-84194146826594264762013-04-30T21:39:00.001-07:002013-04-30T21:39:37.907-07:00thanks kcw

Thank goodness for KCW....I actually sewed something!

No, it wasn't an hour a day for seven days, as I usually strive for during KCW but it was one complete garment.
This time around that feels tremendous!

Amongst the chaos of the last six weeks my body has craved sewing in the way I imagine most crave coffee. But time and let's be honest, energy were just not in my favor.

Then last week the internet exploded with fantastic clothes created in the name of KCW and it was just the inspiration I needed.

Sunday evening I set to work threading a newly inherited serger, which proved much more difficult than the actual shirt I created.

So thank you KCW.
It's so good to be back.jacqhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10352876847326429859noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109823081313800760.post-37178753791149517752013-03-13T07:10:00.003-07:002013-03-13T07:10:59.712-07:00sew in tune

Still have this song stuck in my head...

Hello!

Excited to be back for the second round of Sew in Tune.

We love music in this house. In the past months my oldest Mae has taken a liking to Yankee Doodle, which he has just recently stopped referring to as 'Yankee Noodle'. This kid has the entire song memorized at the age of 3.

So I had my song.

Outfit sketched.

Set to begin sewing.

Then a week ago I just wasn't feeling it.

As I went through my music library looking for inspiration I came upon Carly Rae Jepson's, Call Me Maybe. Have you seen this video? Love it! My favorite is the band in the garage....their skater look is definitely something I love, beanies and all.

Bam. I had a new song and I was set.

Carly and the boy seem to wear white throughout the entire video so I created a white hoodie. I modified the Made by Rae Flashback Tee and added a pop of color with the green zipper. Wanting to keep the reference to the song somewhat subtle, I hand embroidered a phone cord and stenciled on a telephone.

The black skinny pants were a necessity to go with Converse and beanie to mimic the band. A few months ago I bought the Skinny Jeans Pattern from Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop and have never gotten around to sewing it up. Used a thicker black knit and created a 3-D back pocket to suggest an old rotary phone dial.

Make a 3-D Zipper Pocket

Make sure to create pocket and attach to pants prior to sewing leg pieces together.

You will need:

I came home from work the other day and Case was wearing this shirt, something I made for Mae when he was obsessed with fish almost 2 years ago.

Just a basic baseball style tee with some freezer paper stencils that I cut out with an x-acto blade.
The stencil on the back are the Korean characters for fish.
This is the first shirt I made for Mae that was decent enough to hold onto for 2 years for Case. There were a handful that were definitely worn by Mae but weren't worth keeping...if that makes any sense.

So fun to see Case wearing things I made so long ago. He also is keen to fish and every time he sees one he starts making the kissing sound. ha.
